AT HIS FEET

Speaker: Christopher Torres

Scripture: Psalm 27:4; Luke 10:38–42; Luke 7:36–50

I. The Core Desire

"One thing I have asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple."Psalm 27:4

  • Presence > Performance: God calls us to holiness, but it is His presence that gives us the power to live for Him.
  • The Power of Presence: It gives us peace when we should panic and keeps us standing when everything else falls.
  • The Question: Why do we spend more time in the presence of our distractions (phones, stress, relationships) than in the presence of Jesus?

II. The Danger of Distraction

We can be physically present but mentally absent.

  • The Enemy’s Strategy: If the enemy can’t destroy your faith, he will try to distract your devotion.
  • The "Martha" Struggle (Luke 10:38–42):
    • Martha wasn’t "bad"; she was busy.
    • She chose pressure over presence and control over connection.
    • “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.” (v. 41–42)

III. The Boldness of Devotion (Luke 7:36–50)

When the "One Thing" becomes the only thing, everything changes.

The Setting: A Pharisee’s house (at a triclinium table).

  • The Position: The woman stood behind Jesus at His feet. This was a position of total submission, humility, and adoration.
  • The Barrier: She was a "sinner" (likely a prostitute). Her shame told her to stay away, but her desperation drove her close.

Key Lessons from the Woman at His Feet:

  1. She ignored the Critics: She walked into a room where she wasn't invited and didn't care who was watching.
  2. She used what she had: She washed His feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
  3. She found Forgiveness: Jesus didn't see her "reputation"; He saw her "repentance."

"Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much."Luke 7:47

IV. Taking Your Seat

The altar is open. The seat at His feet is yours.

  • What is holding you back? Is it the distraction like Martha or the shame like the woman should have had in Luke 7? (but she didn’t let it stop her!)
  • The Invitation: Don't let social pressure, past mistakes, or a busy schedule keep you from the feet of Jesus.

One Thing Matters: Jesus is calling you back to Him and His presence today.

Personal Reflection / Growth Group Questions:

  1. What are the top three "distractions" currently competing for your attention with Jesus?
  2. In the story of Mary and Martha, do you tend to lean more toward "service" (doing) or "sitting" (being)? How can you find a balance this week?
  3. The woman in Luke 7 risked public embarrassment to get to Jesus. What is one "risk" you need to take in your faith right now?
  4. Jesus told the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." What area of your life do you need to receive God’s peace in today?
